Hey HF--my intuition matches yours (about the commercial viability of further releases), but I don't really have any idea what the average sales are of vault, DP, or DL releases. Do you have more info on any of that than I do?

10 discs of Fillmore East 69 sold 10,000 copies before even being released. Are sales of the average DP lower than that, I wonder? Can they really cost that much to produce?

On the one hand, I'd love a DP every three months like in the old days, and would buy 2/3 to 3/4 of them. On the other hand, I have to admit that 36 DPs on top of 13 DLs and all those vault releases has to look like a rather cumbersome backlist to the average music company.

FWIW, my abiding fantasy is that some sort of omnibus processing of large numbers of vault releases is in the works, which people could purchase for DL one at a time and/or in bulk and/or by subscription. 1977 would be a good year to start with. I also believe in the Easter Bunny.

There have been 39 weekly releases in the Tapers Section @ Dead.net, and until this weeks release you could DL all the songs. They've changed it so that ALL of the previous weeks songs are stream-only affairs, which is a little disappointing to say the least.

With each weeks list of songs adding up to what was basically an entire set of material, they could've easily been concentrating on whole shows instead of individual songs, suites, & jams. By this measure, they could've had AT LEAST 15-20 shows available---I'd rather have had that there for me to PURCHASE, rather than the crumbs available for FREE.

Now we can all do just a little work on our own & DL---even SBD's from this site---from various other sites, or trade with actual PEOPLE for shows & songs we want. But again, having my druthers, I still like to have something official available to me to purchase if I so wish, and I still say Lemieux's effort has, for the most part, been a waste of effort.

I hope it's correct that they're (Rhino & GDP) have been working on prepping MANY shows to be available to DL f/$'s, or purchase as CD releases. Come on Rhino---we're not getting any younger!!!

Hey Lou - My guess is that sales of the latest releases are in the tens-of-thousands, not hundreds-of-thousands. That's just a guess.

So, for physical CD release, the profits are likely measly.

What is viable is the DL series, and I think if they fine-tune their price-point there are profits to be made....

they are going to be hard pressed to get their money back now considering the cost of cd print.

lord know i (and prob many others) will just take our etree and be happy with that

i feel like i have been fucked to a certain extent - not totally - and i am not not bitter - but i am more than happy with etree - have no need for $25 releases thank you very much - heard them done that

Yes, if fine-tune means lower I totally agree. Not that the price-point has kept me from buying most of them.

Hey, they go for about $350 on ebay. A testicle (left or right) has to go for more than that!
